Victorian Bush Poetry and Music Championships 2008

The Victorian Bush Poetry and Music Association Inc. will conduct the Victorian State Championships for both poetry and Australian Song/Music, at Benalla over the weekend 11-12 October 2008.

On Friday evening there will be a rare opportunity for Victorians to be entertained by one of the top Australian Bush Poets, Noel Stallard. Noel is a former men's Australian Champion and is well known for specialising in performing poetry written by John O'Brien, who was actually Father Patrick Hartigan.

The venue is the Benalla Bowls Club. Poets breakfasts will run from 8am to 10am on both Saturday and Sunday. The Traditional poem category - poems written prior to 1950 - will be on Saturday morning.

After lunch the 'Original'  Song/Music section will be held, followed by the 'Original' poem category.

On Saturday evening there will be a fantastic Variety Concert, which will include the 'Other' song/music section, yarn spinning and some song/music items from  judges and more poetry by judges and others.

Entry to each Concert is $10 per adult, or $5 concession.

Entry to  Poets Breakfasts is free!

Entry during Saturday and Sunday is by gold coin donation by adults for each day. Children free.

Central Goldfields Bush Poets ( Verse and Song ) Group Inc.

The Central Goldfields Bush Poets, Traditional Singers, Bush Music and Yarn Spinning group are based in Bendigo Victoria. They hold free concerts from 2pm - 5pm on the second Sunday of even numbered months at the White Horse Hotel, Eaglehawk Rd, California Gully ( Bendigo).

The group conducts an annual bush poetry competition for Primary School Children as part of their Rusty Nail Bush Verse Festival. The 2008 festival will be held at the Marong Hall, Marong on Sunday 14 September.

$1,000 prize money and 15 trophies will be won by school students, in the written and two performance sections. Poems may be read.

The day commences at 9am with a poetry and song/music breakfast, through to 11am when the official opening ceremony will take place. Children then begin performing. Lunch will be from 12.30pm to 1.30pm with entertainment provided. Food and refreshments available throughout the day. 

Presentations will commence around 3.30pm.
